Translate Property Page:

Translate:

All nodes, with the exception of the Ground Node, will have the Translate property page. Recall that if these transformations are applied to a group node, then all of the descendants of that group will be influenced by the transformation.

When the translation property page is selected, the selected node will move along with the cursor as you drag it across the screen. Even if the property sheet is not showing, you can translate the selected node by dragging the cursor if you are in translate mode. There are four ways that you can set translate mode; select the translate tab in the property sheet, select the translate toggle in the tool bar, select the translate option in the Edit menu, or select the translate option in the right mouse button popup menu. You can use the same four methods to set Rotation and Scale modes. The cursor will change to remind you which mode you are in. The tool bar and menus will also show the current drag mode. Of course, you can also type the values into the fields in the property sheet.

When dragging, the motion of the node is determined by the orientation of the current view. When you drag the node, you will be moving in the plane of the screen. More exactly, you will be moving the node in the plane that is parallel to the plane of the view. The Node will not change its depth relative to the view.

If you press the control key when you finish dragging, you will create a copy of the dragged node. That Control to Copy feature is consistent with many Windows Apps. If you press the Shift Key while dragging, you will translate the node in and out of the screen. More exactly, it will move along a vector normal to the current view.

There are several modifier Keys that will modify how the Node will translate as you drag it on the scene.

Pressing CTRL while releasing the Mouse Button will create a Copy of the Node.

Pressing "X", "Y", or "Z" while dragging will constrain the motion of the Node so it moves only along that local Axis corresponding to the Key that is pressed.

Pressing SHIFT while Dragging will cause the Node to move in and out of the view your are working in.

Also, while you are in Translate Mode, the three Slider Bars in the Control Bar will allow you to translate the Node in the local X, Y, and Z direction by using the corresponding Slider.  Note the Translate Icon is depressed.

Center of Rotation and Scale:

If you select the "Center" radio button rather than the "Translate" radio button, then you will be moving the Center of Rotation and Scale, rather than moving the Node itself.  The Center of Rotation and Scale is visible in the 3D window on the selected  Node.  It appears as a grey diamond:

When the Center Radio Button is Pressed, all the same Key Modifiers described above will function.  Also, the Slider Bar will control the Center of the Node.  Note the Center Icon is depressed.
